OceanBit and Energy Estate to develop ocean thermal power plants and AI infrastructure and create energy and digital resiliency for coastal and island communities
15 January 2026
OceanBit and Energy Estate have partnered to deliver Ocean Thermal energy systems and green compute solutions, with an initial focus on Pacific and Indian Ocean coastal and island communities.
OceanBit’s world leading solution harnesses ocean thermal gradients for sustainable power generation plants which are co-located with data centers.
OceanBit, a leader in the development of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) technology and co-located data centers, and Energy Estate, an energy and infrastructure development company with a commitment to regional economic development, have entered into a partnership to develop ocean thermal power plants and digital infrastructure.
The partnership will initially focus on the opportunities to enhance energy and digital security for Pacific and Indian Ocean coastal and island communities and help to replace aging and expensive diesel-powered generation. The partnership will also complement Energy Estate Digital’s accelerated development of new subsea data cables between key digital hubs such as California, Japan, India and Australia/NZ which will have landing points on islands such as Hawaii, Fiji, The Maldives and Coco Islands.
“By combining OceanBit’s technology leadership with our track record of developing energy and digital infrastructure, we can create resilient, future-ready ecosystems that deliver real and enduring benefits for coastal communities and industry,” said Vincent Dwyer, Co-Founder of Energy Estate.
The partnership and integration of Ocean Thermal technology supports OceanBit’s vision to deliver sustainable, carbon-free energy and high-density compute infrastructure, providing 24/7 renewable power and resilient data solutions that reduce emissions, lower costs, and support electrification of coastal and island communities worldwide.
Nathaniel Harmon, Co-Founder & CEO of OceanBit, adds “Our collaboration with Energy Estate accelerates our mission to deliver sustainable energy to global communities like ours in Hawaii through data solutions. Together, we will set new benchmarks for energy efficiency, connectivity and environmental stewardship, safeguarding ecosystems and resources for current and future generations.”
“Co-location is the future. Integrating data centers with Ocean Thermal power plants will help islands reduce dependency on fossil fuel imports and support existing and new industries through access to enhanced digital infrastructure.” said Simon Currie, Co-Founder and Chief Projects Officer of Energy Estate. “One of the features of OTEC is that it is repeatable which will help us scale up to meet demand across multiple island and coastal locations”.

What is Ocean Thermal or OTEC?
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC), often called just ‘Ocean Thermal’, is one of three sources of baseload renewable energy. Along with hydropower and geothermal, Ocean Thermal produces energy 24/7/365 and is the only baseload renewable energy source available on the Ocean. Ocean Thermal uses the same closed-cycle heat engine and equipment as Geothermal, but instead of drilling to find heat Ocean Thermal uses the temperature difference between warm surface and cold deep ocean waters to generate electricity. The solution works best in areas where the temperature difference is greater than 20°C - forming the ‘Ocean Thermal Zone’ between the 23rd parallel north and 23rd parallel south covering ~40% of the Earth’s surface with 5-8 TW of resource.
